BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS (BV)
BV is a very common infection or inflammation of the vagina. BV is caused when the “good” and “bad” bacterial balance is disturbed. Bacteria grow best in a moist, warm and dark environment. Pregnancy, diabetes, and the use of antibiotics can all disturb this balance and lead to an overgrowth of bacteria that causes BV. Prevention is the key in maintaining a healthy balance of vaginal bacterial.

PREVENTATIVE MEASURES
Good Hygiene - after using the toilet, always wipe the perineal area from front to back starting at the vagina and wiping back towards the anus).
Do not use vaginal douches, deodorants, dyed or perfumed toilet tissue, scented soap or bubble baths.
Wear cotton underpants, avoid thong panties, change tampons or pads frequently.
Lose weight if obese.

TREATMENT
Clindamycin or Metronidazole in oral or intravaginal tablets are the medications of choice in the treatment of BV. Both are safe to use in pregnancy.
Lactinex and Fem-dophilis are tablets containing “good” bacteria (lactobacillus) and help in restoring the bacterial balance in the vagina.
